A Few Days Later
Things were as ordinary as they could be, given that my house had burned down. I was still waiting for the police report or whoever did that report. It hadn't been clear to me the day of the fire - nothing had been clear to me that day.
My home wasn't ancient, and the wiring wasn't bad as far as I knew. I didn't leave an appliance on. I couldn't imagine what could have sparked a fire in my house.
My coffee shop was buzzing, but everyone had been taken care of. The initial rush of people wanting to know about my house and where I was living was gone, but people still came in and hung out. That's what I'd envisioned when I'd opened the coffee shop.
I wiped down all the surfaces I could, knowing there might be another rush at any minute. I filled the pastries resisting the temptation to eat one for a snack. My stomach could wait until after the next rush.
Zane's sisters had stocked the refrigerator with healthy items. I made Emma a good lunch without a problem. So things were good, but I was in a sort of limbo. I didn't know when I'd get the money for the damages.
The Cattlemen's Association met in the back room. Things were getting back on track.
Then an official-looking man entered the coffee shop. I guessed someone from law enforcement since his gaze surveyed the place before resting on me. Either that or he would rob me, but I couldn't imagine someone would do that with the shop so full. One table near the counter sat empty. Everything else either had people chatting or someone doing work on a laptop.
He approached my counter, and I put a smile on my face. I wasn't expecting good news from him, but my instincts could be wrong. "Are you Bella Brandt?"
"Yes."
He pulled out a badge and placed it on the counter. "I'm Wes Hardy, an arson investigator."
I'd been right. The guy was official. I glanced at the badge and confirmed it was his picture on the attached identification. I stayed away from cops or anyone in law enforcement. My ex was less likely to find me if I stayed below the radar. That was the goal of being in Hadley. It would be the last place anyone would look for a city girl like me.
He tucked away his credentials. "Is there somewhere we can talk?"
"No. My backroom is being used."
He glanced around. "Outside?"
He had terrible news to tell me, and I appreciated that he didn't want to share it with my customers.
"We can go out the back door and into the alley. Not high-class digs, but we'll have privacy."
He followed me out, glancing into the partially open door where Zane and his friends were holding a meeting. This man didn't miss anything.
We stood outside among the dumpsters, but no one else was around. Zane couldn't see me from this angle. Whatever news this man was going to give me, I wanted to digest it before I did anything about it.
